Are people getting nicer because they are getting smarter?
Yes, we are getting smarter, and we are becoming nicer. But for as long as we continue to delegate morality to religious or governmental elites, the effects of our kindheartedness will be minimized by corruption, inequality and special interests which are protected by public institutions. Good behavior can be extorted from people with the threat of punishment (prison, hell, and everything in between), but avoiding punishment does not equal morality.
